Have you ever stared at your electricity bill and wondered where all the energy went ? I had that moment a few months ago and it made me realize how much electricity that I had wasted without noticing it. That small realization hit me in starting my journey towards practicing one of the 17 SDG goals - SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy in my daily life.
When I first decided to practice SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy, I wasn’t completely sure what to expect. I knew that saving energy is important, but I didn’t realize how much impact it could make. Before I started practicing this SDG 7, I wondered if I could really change my daily habits. A lot of questions were running through my mind at that time. Would I forget to switch off the lights ? Would my family support my idea ?
Are there any challenges when I start practicing doing it ?
I would say yes. One challenge that I worried the most about is the consistency in doing this practicing. It was easy to be motivated at first, but maintaining it seems really difficult. So, I did a bit of reading about energy conservation and always reminded myself that every small action counts.
During the journey, I had started slowly practicing simple habits such as switching off lights, fans and chargers when they were not needed. At first, it really needed a lot of effort because I wasn’t used to it. However, after a long time, I became used to it. I also recommend to my family to replace our old bulbs with energy-saving LED ones. What surprised me the most was that my family was also able to adapt quickly throughout this journey. I thought this journey would be really challenging, but it turned out smoother than I thought.
Is it working out as I expected ?
I would say yes but at the same time no. It is because there were moments that I forgot, especially on busy days, but I keep trying to remind myself without feeling discouraged. I know that building a habit takes a very long time. However, there’s a thing that helped me in stay motivated. It was checking our monthly electricity bill. I noticed there’s a slight drop after a few months practicing this. It really showed me that our efforts in saving electricity were actually working out. One thing that I learned from this journey is sustainability is not about perfection but it is about progress.
What have I learnt from this journey ?
Overall, I learned that practicing SDG 7 doesn’t require big actions but it just needs commitment and awareness from ourselves. Throughout this journey, it taught me how to be more responsible, disciplined and the importance of caring for the environment. Most importantly, it showed me that anyone can contribute to sustainability, starting from home.
